DC7909 vs DC8020: the barrel plugs on Jackery and Bluetti

DC7909 and DC8020 differ by 0.1 mm in outer diameter (7.9 mm against 8.0 mm). Their center pins differ by 1.1 mm (0.9 mm against 2.0 mm). Jackery says they look almost identical and are not interchangeable.

Two plugs that look alike

A center pin 1.1 mm thicker is the main difference between Jackery's DC8020 and the older DC7909. Jackery's compatibility FAQ gives the numbers. DC7909 measures 7.9 mm across the outside with a 0.9 mm pin. DC8020 measures 8.0 mm with a 2.0 mm pin. Both have a 5.5 mm inner diameter. Both are positive on the inner wall and negative on the outer wall.

Jackery's own article on connectors says a DC7909 plug looks nearly identical to a DC8020 plug, but they are not interchangeable. It adds that forcing the wrong one can damage the port. It can also leave a loose connection that arcs and melts.

Which stations use which plug

Jackery's FAQ puts the DC7909 on its older Explorer 240, 300, 500, 880 and 1000. It puts the DC8020 on the Explorer 1500, the v2 series, the Plus series and the 1500 Ultra. The Explorer 1000 v2 is a DC8020 station, with two ports at 16 to 60 V and 10.5 A each. Jackery's SolarSaga 200 panel also ends in DC8020.

Bluetti uses DC7909 on a different set of stations. The EB3A takes 12 to 28 V and 8.5 A at 200 W. The AC180 takes 12 to 60 V and 10 A at 500 W. The Pioneer prints a DC input of 500 W at 12 to 60 V and 10 A. Bluetti sells a solar cable from MC4 to DC7909 for the EB3A and the B80 battery.

Adapters between the two

Jackery sells adapters in both directions, DC7909 to DC8020 and DC8020 to DC7909. Its product page prints 14 A and 100 V as the maximum for the adapter. It names the E1000, E708, E500, E400, E290 and E240 series on one of them. Jackery's product pages and its connection guide list different station models for these adapters. The station's own input spec is the tiebreaker.

Jackery's adapters only bridge DC7909 and DC8020. The MC4-to-DC7909 cables come from Bluetti. Anker's PS100 guide tells owners with a DC7909 solar port to join its Solar to XT-60 cable with an XT-60 to DC7909 cable.

The USB-C route on small Jackery stations

Jackery's smallest stations skip the barrel plug altogether. The Explorer 100 Plus, 300 Plus and 240 take solar through a DC8020 to USB-C adapter, which Jackery prints at 5 A and 100 V. The USB-C solar windows Jackery prints for these stations top out between 20 V and 27.2 V at 5 A. That is well below the 60 V ceiling on larger DC8020 stations. A panel that suits one may not suit the other.

A plug that fits is only the first check

The SolarSaga 200 prints a Voc of 22 V and a short-circuit current of 12.5 A. Its voltage sits inside the EB3A's 12 to 28 V window. Its current is above the EB3A's printed 8.5 A. So a matching plug would still leave a mismatch in amps. The solar panel fit checker compares both numbers. The cable finder lists which adapters exist for each pair of plugs.

FAQ

Can I force a DC7909 plug into a DC8020 port?

Jackery says no. It states that forcing the wrong plug can damage the port or leave a loose connection that arcs and melts. It sells adapters for crossing between the two.

Which Jackery stations use DC8020?

Jackery lists the Explorer 1500, the v2 series, the Plus series and the 1500 Ultra. The Explorer 100 Plus, 300 Plus and 240 take solar through a DC8020 to USB-C adapter instead.

Does Bluetti use the same plug on every station?

No. The EB3A, EB70S, AC180, AC180P and Pioneer use DC7909. Bluetti's Elite and AC2 stations use XT60, and its AC200 series uses XT90 or an aviation plug.
